Spain are through to the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals after a 1-1 draw against England in Nyon.

Tied on six points at the top of elite round Group 2 at the start of the day, both teams knew that victory would assure them of a place in Romania. Spain struck first through Isco and though England drew level courtesy of Harry Kane, it is Julen Lopetegui's side which progress on goal difference.

Isco was lively throughout and after a couple of early openings for England, he shot narrowly over on ten miunutes. Koke did likewise from ten metres when Jack Butland parried a shot from Pablo Sarabia, who failed to convert when presented with a chance of his own soon after.

The breakthrough arrived on 26 minutes, however, Isco curling a fantastic free-kick into the corner. Noel Blake's charges failed to buckle, though, and were level in the second minute of first-half added time when Michael Ngoo squared across goal for Kane to stab in from close range.

Both teams started tentatively after the interval, Spain first to show their hand when Álvaro Morata headed over. Again England came fighting back but were frustrated in their attempts for a winner, substitute Jamaal Lascelles going closest only to be denied by Sergi Gómez's presence on the line. Isco nearly won it for Spain late on, Butland saving well, but a point was sufficient.

"It was a difficult game as obviously we had to win," said England manager Noel Blake. "We know Spain dominate the ball because that's the way they play and they did it very very well. I was disappointed with us a little bit first half, especially the back players. They played too direct and we don't encourage that."
