German clubs set gold standard

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam's sudden-death shoot-out victory against Olympique Lyonnais in the first UEFA Women's Champions League final on Thursday extended Germany's dominance of female European club competition and left France still searching for a maiden winner.

Frauen-Bundesliga teams never looked back after 1. FFC Frankfurt won the first edition of the UEFA Women's Cup back in 2002, and the country's elite side will hope Potsdam's triumph in Getafe – 7-6 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes – will lead to more of the same following the change of format this season.

Potsdam join Swedish club Umeå IK on two European triumphs, one fewer than Frankfurt. FCR 2001 Duisburg are the other German club to have lifted the trophy, while England is the only other nation to boast a winner following Arsenal LFC's UEFA Women's Cup success in 2007.
