Wolfsburg and Arsenal among four to advance

UEFA Women's Champions League holders VfL Wolfsburg and 2007 winners Arsenal LFC will feature in the quarter-finals alongside FC Barcelona and Birmingham City LFC after four round of 16 ties were completed on Wednesday night. The remaining fixtures take place on Thursday ahead of the quarter-final draw, streamed live on UEFA.com at 14.00CET on 21 November from Nyon.

VfL Wolfsburg 3-1 FCR Malmö (agg: 5-2)
The German outfit continued the defence of their title by ousting the Swedish champions, who were unfortunate to lose the first leg after dominating for long spells. The hosts made their first-half superiority count in unorthodox fashion, Lena Goessling's hopeful free-kick bouncing over Malmö keeper Thóra Helgadóttir and into the net. Luisa Wensing headed in soon after to double the advantage. Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir pulled one back in the second half after Goessling had left the pitch on a stretcher, before Martina Müller, scorer of the winner in last season's final, put the result beyond doubt a minute from time.

FC Zürich Frauen 1-3 FC Barcelona (agg: 1-6)
In front of a crowd of 7,304 at the Letzigrund, a record for a women's game in Switzerland, Zürich restored hope when Marta Torrejón put through her own net after 24 minutes. Their joy was short-lived, though, as Ruth García put Barcelona back in charge before second-half strikes from Marta Corredera and Jelena Čanković sealed the Catalan club a place in their first quarter-final.

Glasgow City LFC 2-3 Arsenal LFC (agg: 2-6)
A sell-out 1,300 crowd at Petershill were given hope of a comeback in the competition's maiden Anglo-Scottish tie when Suzanne Lappin flashed a header in from Jessica Fishlock's corner on two minutes. The Gunners soon drew level on the night, though, courtesy of a fantastic long-range effort from Rachel Yankey. In the second period, Jordan Nobbs gave the 2007 winners the lead, before City captain Rachel Corsie equalised with a header. As the clock ticked down, Glasgow were denied the consolation of a draw when Kim Little set up Alex Scott for the winner.

Birmingham City LFC 5-2 FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk (agg: 7-2)
In their first game at St Andrew's, home of their men's side, Birmingham completed a fine win over their Russian opponents. In doing so, they emulated Barcelona in reaching a maiden quarter-final having succumbed at the first hurdle on their 2012/13 debut. Isobel Christiansen, who scored in the opener, tapped in from close range after four minutes and Kirsty Linnett swiftly added another. Zorkiy forward Maria Ruiz then reduced the deficit and Ashley Nick's powerful header levelled matters on the night. However, Kerys Harrop headed the Blues back in front, Linnett made it four and Melissa Lawley combined with Karen Carney to complete the formalities.
