Finalists win as Arsenal celebrate

UEFA Women's Champions League finalists 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and Olympique Lyonnais both won this weekend ahead of their 20 May decider in Getafe while Arsenal LFC retained the English title.

While Potsdam had already ensured a second straight German championship, Lyon have a fight on their hands to retain the French crown. However, they boosted their hopes on Sunday with a 3-0 win at FCF Nord Allier, Élodie Thomis's early goal added to in the second half by Lara Dickenmann and Sandrine Brétigny. Lyon are now within five points of leaders FCF Juvisy and four of Paris Saint-Germain FC, and have two games in hand on both, starting with Thursday's trip to ASJ Soyaux.

Potsdam completed their Frauen-Bundesliga season on Sunday with a 3-1 win at VfL Wolfsburg. Yuki Nagasato's fourth-minute strike was cancelled out midway through the second half by Martina Müller only for Babett Peter and Isabel Kerschowski to ensure Potsdam victory. They finished five points clear of the side they beat in the European semi-finals, FCR 2001 Duisburg, who booked a place in next season's UEFA Women's Champions League with a 2-1 win at Bayern München. Duisburg's Inka Grings finished top scorer for the third year running, and a record sixth season overall, on 30 goals.

Former European champions Arsenal lost their grip on the FA Women's Cup a week ago with an extra-time loss to Everton LFC but took revenge on Sunday as they beat the Toffees 4-2 to clinch a seventh straight FA Women's Premier League title. The race for second, and a UEFA Women's Champions League place, remains tight with Everton three points behind Leeds Carnegie LFC and two adrift of Chelsea LFC but with two games left to their rivals' one and a much better goal difference. This is the last season before the new eight-team summer FA Women's Super League launches in March 2011.
