Schröder salutes Potsdam triumph

Bernd Schröder watched his 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam side reach the UEFA Women's Champions League final in Getafe on 20 May with a penalty shoot-out defeat of German rivals FCR 2001 Duisburg and hailed 17-year-old goalkeeper Anna Felicitas Sarholz, who saved three spot kicks, for an "amazing performance". Substitute Tabea Kemme had wiped out Duisburg's 1-0 first-leg lead within minutes of her introduction and Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, whose FCR side were defending European champions, conceded her team were below par.

To reach the Champions League final is the biggest achievement ever for the club and for the city after the UEFA Women's Cup win in 2005. It was a tight, but very fair competition between the two best European teams. I don't want to point out an individual player, but our 17-year-old goalkeeper has such a strong personality and showed an amazing performance throughout the game today.

We knew before that we could play better than we did in the previous games against Duisburg, but I didn't expect before to reach the Champions League final. To bring in Tabea Kemme was a mix of luck, chance and a little bit of intelligence. I am looking forward to Getafe now, it's also another personal highlight of my career. It doesn't matter if we play Lyon or Umeå, though I think the French team might be a bit stronger, as Umeå have lost a couple of key players.

We were not able to repeat the performance from the first leg. Congratulations to Potsdam, they deserved to win today and to reach the final. It was an open game in the first half, but in the second half Turbine increased the pressure and we couldn't stand firm. Our defenders had a great game, but our attack was bad today and didn't find any way to break through and to open up the game.

It was a tight competition until the very last second, but if you can't convert three penalties in a shoot-out you don't deserve to win. Some of our players didn't show what they are capable of. I don't have an explanation for that. I am really disappointed.

Congratulations to Potsdam. It was an unlucky defeat, as always if you lose on penalties, but we maybe deserved to lose today. We tried hard to avoid conceding a goal, but we weren't successful, as Potsdam worked hard for their goal.
