UEFA Champions League winners Manchester City make their first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup against one of the sides they overcame on their way to glory in June, Sevilla – who responded to an early Champions League elimination by clinching their seventh title in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League.

Pep Guardiola's side won 4-0 in Seville and 3-1 in Manchester in last season's Champions League group stage – making it four City wins in as many matches against Sevilla – and went on take the trophy unbeaten, their eighth win in their 13 fixtures a 1-0 final triumph against Inter Milan in Istanbul on 10 June.

Sevilla won only one of their six games in the 2022/23 Champions League but once again reigned supreme in the Europa League, winning four of their nine fixtures – all those victories coming at home – before beating Roma 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Budapest.

This is the eighth Anglo-Spanish fixture in the Super Cup, with England having four victories in those previous seven contests to Spain's three.

Super Cup pedigree

Manchester City

This is City's first appearance in the Super Cup; they are the 40th club to feature and the third successive debutants after Eintracht Frankfurt last year and Villarreal in 2021 – who both lost.

The Champions League winners have lifted the Super Cup in nine of the last ten contests, the exception Atlético de Madrid's 2018 success against Real Madrid.

City are the seventh English club to feature in the Super Cup, after Liverpool (1977, 1978, 1984, 2001, 2005, 2019), Chelsea (1998, 2012, 2013, 2019, 2021), Manchester United (1991, 1999, 2008, 2017), Nottingham Forest (1979, 1980), Aston Villa (1982) and Arsenal (1994).

The Cityzens would become the sixth English side to win the Super Cup and the third in five years after Liverpool's triumph in 2019 and Chelsea's 2021 success.

City are aiming to become the 25th club to lift the trophy and the first new winners since Bayern München in 2013.

A total of 14 clubs have lost on their only Super Cup appearance, most recently Frankfurt against Real Madrid in Helsinki in 2022.

English sides have won on nine of their 19 Super Cup appearances.

City manager Pep Guardiola has won the Super Cup three times as a coach (Barcelona 2009, 2011, Bayern 2013) and once as a player (Barcelona 1992). Victory would take Guardiola level with Carlo Ancelotti as the coach with most Super Cup wins (four) and would make him the first to win it with three different teams.

Sevilla

This is Sevilla's seventh appearance in the Super Cup, matching AC Milan; only Barcelona (nine appearances) and Real Madrid (eight) can better that.

Sevilla have only ever featured as UEFA Cup/ Europa League winners. Their record is W1 L5:
2006: 3-0 v Barcelona (Monaco)
2007: 1-3 v AC Milan (Monaco)
2014: 0-2 v Real Madrid (Cardiff)
2015: 4-5 v Barcelona (aet, Tbilisi)
2016: 2-3 v Real Madrid (aet, Trondheim)
2020: 1-2 v Bayern München (aet, Budapest)

Sevilla's defeat by Bayern three years ago set a new record for Super Cup losses, one more than Barcelona. Their last three defeats have all come after extra time.

Spanish sides have won the Super Cup a record 16 times, with a further 14 runners-up appearances; Liga clubs triumphed every year bar one between 2009 and 2018 and again in 2022.

This is Spain's 31st Super Cup appearance – a competition record.

Sevilla have been involved in the highest-scoring Super Cup game (2015, Barcelona 5-4 Sevilla) and also boast the joint-biggest winning margin in a single-leg tie (2006, Sevilla 3-0 Barcelona).

City won the Champions League for the first time in 2022/23, beating Inter 1-0 in the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul thanks to a second-half goal from Rodri. Guardiola's team had finished top of Group G before knockout wins against Leipzig (1-1 a, 7-0 h), Bayern (3-0 h, 1-1 a) and holders Real Madrid (1-1 a, 4-0 h).

The final victory brought Guardiola level with Zinédine Zidane and Bob Paisley with three European Cup wins as a coach in total. Only Ancelotti has more with four.

Guardiola, a winner with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011, also became the sixth coach to win the European Cup with two different clubs, after Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburg 1983), Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), José Mourinho (Porto 2004, Inter 2010), Jupp Heynckes (Real Madrid 1998, Bayern 2013) and Ancelotti (AC Milan 2003, 2007, Real Madrid 2014, 2022).

Haaland was the top scorer in the competition with 12 goals including five in the round of 16 second leg against Leipzig. Midfielder Rodri was selected as Player of the Season.

They have won all four single-leg UEFA ties against English opposition on neutral terrain, the most recent a 2-1 comeback defeat of Manchester United in the 2019/20 Europa League semi-final in Cologne.

The second-leg win against United in last season's Europa League quarter-finals is one of only two victories in Sevilla's last eight matches against English clubs (D2 L4).

Sevilla have played once in the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in UEFA competition, losing 2-1 at Olympiacos in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup second round second leg to go through on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
