Histoire
• Fondé sur le site d'une usine de trains, le KhPZ (Kharkovski Parovozostroitelni Zavod – Usine de trains de Kharkiv) a participé à la toute première Coupe de l'URSS en 1938, avant d'intégrer la troisième division du Championnat soviétique en 1946, sous le nom du FC Traktor.
• Rebaptisé FC Dzerzhvnets en l'honneur de Felix Dzerzhinsky, fondateur de la police secrète soviétique, le club a évolué en deuxième division de 1947 à 1949, puis sous le nom de FC Avangard lorsqu'il a intégré le première division soviétique à partir de 1960. Sixième sous les ordres de l'entraîneur Olexandr Ponomariov en 1961, le club a ensuite été relégué deux ans plus tard.
• Promu dans l'élite en 1981 sous Yevgen Lemeshko, le Metalist (nom qui signifie "forgerons") s'est incliné en finale de Coupe de l'URSS en 1983 face au FC Shakhtar Donetsk, avant d'emporter l'édition 1988, son unique trophée à ce jour, en battant le FC Torpedo Moskva.
• Membre fondateur du championnat ukrainien au printemps 1992, le club de Kharkiv était relégué en 1993/94, et ne retrouvait l'élite que quatre ans plus tard, grâce à de nouveaux investisseurs.
• L'équipe de Myron Markevich terminait troisième pendant quatre saisons d'affilée, de 2007 à 2010, et faisait aussi bien qu'en 1988/89 en atteignant les 8es de finale de la Coupe UEFA 2008/09. Le Metalist franchissait plus tard avec succès la phase de groupes de l'UEFA Europa League 2010/11.
